Overcoming a ‘Leadership Bottleneck’ in a Buddies Day Program

These are a few thoughts on how we might prevent a ‘leadership bottleneck’ from limiting our Buddies Day programs. The problem in brief is that we can often find the volunteers but it is hard to find enough who are willing to take on leadership roles. How might we prevent or overcome this problem? At the moment I can think of two broad problems and how they might be addressed.

Problem 1: Not Enough Support and Structure

Hi all,

At long last I've gotten round to typing up some of the main points raised by Ted Flack when Brett, Cat and myself met with him last week.

From a marketing point of view, he basically said that to get people involved we need to tell personal stories in a way that gives people goosebumps.

We spent a lot of the time in general discussion around the needs of youth and how a volunteer program should meet these needs.

Some of the needs we came up with were:

1. To meet ...

Hey guys, Just wanted to officially invite everyone to attend the Vinnies Social Justice Youth Festival being held in Rockhapotn on the 1st Nov. The Rockhampton Youth Conference are conducting the festival with the concept of a NO MONEY DAY so that young people who cannot normally attend festive events due to financial hardship can have a afternoon and evening of entertainment and activites. The main aim of the day however is to connect the youth of Rockhampton with St Vincent de Paul Society ...

I've been thinking about the 'Buddies Roadshow' idea and wondering if it could be extended to include the following situation. We have 3 towns within 60-90 minute's drive of Townsville each of which has a Catholic high school that is involved in Vinnies or could become involved. We could take a group of Buddies Day volunteers from here and get more from the local town, organised through school Vinnies, and put on a Buddies Day in that town for the local kids. These would be one-day trips on an ...

School to Post-School Transition

This is a crucial issue that needs more thought. It would be good if we can pool all the ideas we come up with. To get the ball rolling on this topic, I offer the following.

I think in general this issue is closely related to the larger issue of strengthening the whole school-based experience of Vinnies so that what happens after school is coming from a more thorough grounding during the school years.

Strengthening the school Vinnies experience

Hi everyone,

I think I may have mentioned to you all in Rocky or on a teleconference about the Year 12 dinner celebration I have been planning for the end of October for Year 12 students that have been involved in Vinnies at high school. Unfortunately I only received one RSVP for this dinner and so it has been cancelled   It seems timing was not right. The afternoon/evening was going to include;

● Badge/certificate presentation

● Games/activities

Local Newsletters

I've just seen a copy of Laine's October Newsletter, which I hadn't previously been aware of. It is very informative. Does anyone else put out a regular newsletter for their area? In Townsville we are starting to look at our information strategy since we have, in a sense, a single pool of regular stuff which needs to be 'packaged' as reports, newsletters, email newsletters, forum contributions, contributions to Catholic Leader, etc. Like all of us, I tend to be fairly busy, so I hope to come ...

Managing Conflict and Challenging Behaviours in Young People: Strategies and Frameworks

Education QLD has reported an alarming spike in school suspensions for students being aggressive, disobedient, taking drugs and truancy across the state. This rise calls for all professionals working with young people to be more equipped with practical skills and knowledge to address and manage conflict and challenging behaviours in young people. The Youth and Community Combined Action Network (YACCAN) ...

A big bunch of kids attended our October Buddies Day at the Townsville Entertaniment Centre to see the Crocs play (and unfortunately lose to!) the Perth Wildcats. Our inside man (Duncan) was games manager for the night and got a number of the kids down to play games on the court during the breaks. The Crocs gave us 50 free tickets, and posters for everyone. A number of Vinnies 'elders' helped with the transport, one of whom drove the bus, kindly loaned by Ryan Catholic College. It made a big ...

SASSY Mission

After our meeting last week I tried to write down in the simplest way I could what I thought the sassy mission is. This already assumes the Vinnies mission, but adds what I would see myself trying to do as a facilitator. It is a single sentence, which has a commentary which spells out the sense of each key word.

SASSY Mission

“To introduce young people to the Vincentian vocation and facilitate their long term participation in the Society.”

I think an idea for the newsletter would be to do a spot profile in each edition on a member of the team and or a volunteer so that the wider community can start putting faces and humanising that which they know as the SASSY Team or SASSY Volunteers!!
