Overcoming a ‘Leadership Bottleneck’ in a Buddies Day Program

These are a few thoughts on how we might prevent a ‘leadership bottleneck’ from limiting our Buddies Day programs. The problem in brief is that we can often find the volunteers but it is hard to find enough who are willing to take on leadership roles. How might we prevent or overcome this problem? At the moment I can think of two broad problems and how they might be addressed.

Problem 1: Not Enough Support and Structure

Sassy chat with Ted

Hi all,

At long last I've gotten round to typing up some of the main points raised by Ted Flack when Brett, Cat and myself met with him last week.

From a marketing point of view, he basically said that to get people involved we need to tell personal stories in a way that gives people goosebumps.

We spent a lot of the time in general discussion around the needs of youth and how a volunteer program should meet these needs.

Some of the needs we came up with were:

1. To meet ...

Buddies Roadshow

I've been thinking about the 'Buddies Roadshow' idea and wondering if it could be extended to include the following situation. We have 3 towns within 60-90 minute's drive of Townsville each of which has a Catholic high school that is involved in Vinnies or could become involved. We could take a group of Buddies Day volunteers from here and get more from the local town, organised through school Vinnies, and put on a Buddies Day in that town for the local kids. These would be one-day trips on an ...

The school to post-school transition

School to Post-School Transition

This is a crucial issue that needs more thought. It would be good if we can pool all the ideas we come up with. To get the ball rolling on this topic, I offer the following.

I think in general this issue is closely related to the larger issue of strengthening the whole school-based experience of Vinnies so that what happens after school is coming from a more thorough grounding during the school years.

Strengthening the school Vinnies experience

SASSY Mission

After our meeting last week I tried to write down in the simplest way I could what I thought the sassy mission is. This already assumes the Vinnies mission, but adds what I would see myself trying to do as a facilitator. It is a single sentence, which has a commentary which spells out the sense of each key word.

SASSY Mission

“To introduce young people to the Vincentian vocation and facilitate their long term participation in the Society.”
