Sassy chat with Ted
Hi all,
At long last I've gotten round to typing up some of the main points raised by Ted Flack when Brett, Cat and myself met with him last week.
From a marketing point of view, he basically said that to get people involved we need to tell personal stories in a way that gives people goosebumps.
We spent a lot of the time in general discussion around the needs of youth and how a volunteer program should meet these needs.
Some of the needs we came up with were:
1. To meet and discuss issues relevant to their lives and experiences
2. To express shared values through action (ie volunteering/service)
3. Social valorisation - which increases self esteem and confidence
4. To acquire skills and experiences (through training and participation in programs)
Furthermore, we discussed the following as important attributes of involvement opportunities for young people:
1. That involvement options are flexible
2. There is opportunity to contribute to design of program and manage the project
3. Able to choose level of involvemtn
4. Fit popular culture
5. Is something they are passionate about
Ted suggested that we consider how SASSY's current programs and approach fits both the needs of young people and the important program attributes.
....
Those were the main points I noted down... what do you all think? Pretty much what we already know but a good reaffirmation of the importance of taking time to evaluate how what we do fits with the needs and realities of the people we'd like to get involved!
